Beschreibung

Envisioning the Future by Dealing with the Past. Open and Inclusive Dialogue and Public Discourse within Austria and Slovenia and between the Countries (PRAA)”.

Beschreibung (engl.)
This project if following a five-year process of transnational cooperation between Slovenian and Austrian researchers and practitioners, shortly called PRAA. While it is meant as a documentation of a past process, its main purpose is an intervention into the ongoing dialogue process of dealing with the past in a critical and nonviolent way.
The baroque title of the project is already a description of its program: “Building the Peace Region Alps-Adria. Envisioning the Future by Dealing with the Past. Open and Inclusive Dialogue and Public Discourse within Austria and Slovenia and between the Countries.” It provides a critical reflection of this purposeful planned and organized citizens’ dialogue where opposing (historical) narratives are confronted with each other, namely the case of World War I and the following border dispute, the NS-regime and the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, the partisan resistance and the post-war period with the communism in Yugoslavia and new border disputes and a specific “cold war”, at least in the perception of some people in Carinthia and Slovenia.
In the project, we are publishing a book and organizing an international conference, with the main concerns:
– How can we prevent that (open or potential) conflicts are still exploited by political parties for their power play?
– How can we deal with these complex conflicts in a constructive way? For instance how to continue and deepen the work of antifascist (self-)education without neglecting the errors, wrongdoings or even crimes committed in the name of antifascism?
– Which new perspectives for the future result from this dialogue? (How) is it possible to create a Peace Region Alps Adriatic?

Furthermore, we deal with visions and perspectives of a further dialogue process, even beyond the Austro-Slovenian relations. Different historical narratives and worldviews are not ignored or “reconciled”, but confront each other in a respectful way.
