Beschreibung
Bridge-App is the follow-up project to FLAME-1 (2020 – 2024). The aim of this project is to develop and test a custom-made web-based environment in order to examine the potential interplay between task motivation and foreign language aptitude at primary school level. Such aptitude-treatment fits (ATI, Vatz et al., 2013) have been a common research subject in general gifted education for many years but turn out to be underre-searched with respect to domain-specific areas (Granena, 2019; Granena & Yilmaz, 2018). Although domain-specificity is currently receiving increasing attention in inter-national gifted education projects (Olszewski-Kubilius et al., 2023; Preckel et al., 2020; Reutlinger et al., 2020), a gap must be noted for the area of modern foreign language teaching and learning (Tellier & Roehr-Brackin, 2013).
Bridge-App builds on is predecessor project, which, in a two-year cross-sectional mixed-methods ATI pilot study with self-regulating interventions, produced typical dis-ordinal ATI effects (Resch et al., 2024). However, weaknesses in this research design and contradictions in the data triangulation necessitated a more fine-grained and con-trollable web-based intervention, which will now serve as both task-based intervention and data collection tool.
Bridge-App is divided into 3 phases. First, app content will be created and im-plemented. Then, in phase 2, an exploratory proof-of-concept study will test the feasi-bility of the app idea and determine, in how far potential interactions between task mo-tivation and aptitude can in fact be scrutinized with such an approach. This includes the technical implementation of the app, how user-friendly it is, in how far central in-fluencing factors can be statistically controlled, and the extent to which the resulting data set can be meaningfully statistically modeled. Phase 3 includes the main study with a convenience sample of around 250 4th Austrian grade students; in this study, for-eign language aptitude, enjoyment, processing speed, context factors and user behavior will be related to task motivation by means of structural equation modelling (Hair & Alamer, 2022).
