Das geplante Buchprojekt reagiert auf aktuelle empirische Befunde zu den mathematischen Kompetenzen von Lehramtsstudierenden der Primarstufe in Österreich. Das Forum-Primar-Projekt von Schütky et al. (2025) zeigt, dass sowohl Maturant*innen als auch angehende Volksschullehrkräfte erhebliche Defizite im Bereich der mathematischen Grundkompetenzen aufweisen, insbesondere in den für die Primarstufe relevanten Inhaltsbereichen wie Größen, Operationen und Zahlenverständnis. Diese Lücken erschweren es zukünftigen Lehrkräften, mathematische Konzepte nachhaltig und kompetenzorientiert zu vermitteln.

Das Buch soll Primarstufenlehrkräften und Lehramtsstudierenden ein praxisnahes, fachlich fundiertes Nachschlagewerk zu den mathematischen Grundkompetenzen bieten, die für ein erfolgreiches Studium und einen erfolgreichen Unterricht in der Primarstufe essenziell sind. Es behandelt zentrale Bereiche wie Zahlverständnis, Rechenoperationen, Größenvorstellungen und Geometrie. Der Fokus liegt auf einem tiefgehenden konzeptuellen Verständnis („Profound Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics“). Das Buch wird sowohl als Selbstlernmaterial für Studierende als auch als Fortbildungsgrundlage für Lehrkräfte einsetzbar sein. Ziel ist es, einen Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Stärkung mathematischer Basiskompetenzen in der Primarstufe zu leisten und damit die Qualität des Mathematikunterrichts langfristig zu sichern.

The planned book project addresses current empirical findings on the mathematical competencies of prospective primary school teachers in Austria. The Forum Primar project by Schütky et al. (2025) highlights that both high school graduates and first-year primary teacher education students show significant deficits in basic mathematical competencies, particularly in areas relevant to primary education such as measurement, operations, and number sense. These gaps make it difficult for future teachers to convey mathematical concepts in a sustainable and competence-oriented way.

The book aims to provide primary school teachers and teacher education students with a practice-oriented, academically grounded reference work on fundamental mathematical competencies that are essential for both successful studies and effective teaching in the primary school classroom. It covers key areas such as number sense, arithmetic operations, measurement concepts, and geometry. The focus is on fostering a profound conceptual understanding (“Profound Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics”). The book is designed to serve both as a self-study resource for students and as a professional development tool for in-service teachers. The overarching goal is to contribute to the sustainable strengthening of basic mathematical competencies in primary education, thereby ensuring high-quality mathematics instruction in the long term.
