Beschreibung (engl.)
The general education schools see themselves confronted with the problem of compensating for the lack of complex possibilities for action in the household, workshop and yard by means of action-oriented didactics. The turn towards competence orientation as a turn towards action- and application-oriented teaching and learning should bring new quality to the Austrian school landscape. Great successes in increasing basic mathematical competences through action-oriented teaching have been recorded, especially in mathematics lessons at the Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Graz. The maths didactic concept „Straße der Maße“, which has been tested at numerous Styrian primary and secondary schools, is geared towards measuring and estimating the school and private environment of the pupils. The abstract mathematical number space becomes comprehensible for the pupils through the application-oriented process in the lessons by dealing with sizes and measures. A similar approach is followed by the project „SdM Workshop“, initiated together with the Federation of Austrian Industry, the Styrian Chamber of Commerce, the private University-College of Education Graz and the University of Graz. Together with the apprentice trainers of Styrian industrial companies of all sectors, a didactic concept is being developed in intensive cooperation, which, starting from the professional orientation in the workshops, takes up and significantly expands mathematical and technical basic competences. The aim is to create synergy effects for the apprentices and apprentice trainers, leading to excellent performance in both practical and abstract vocational tasks.
